Exploring Baxter State Park

The crown jewel of Maine’s North Woods is known by most as the home of Mount Katahdin—the end of the Appalachian Trail and Maine’s highest peak. But Baxter State Park is also an expansive paradise of lakes, ponds, mountains and streams in the deepest wilderness of New England. Ryan “Guthook” Linn has explored almost two hundred miles of hiking trails in the park. He will share highlights of backpacking and hiking there, as well as pointers for using the park’s reservation system to plan your next backpacking, day hiking or camping trip.

Wilderness First Aid

Sign up early—this course fills fast! This sixteen-hour, hands-on course will prepare you for backcountry medical emergencies. Its focus is on the prevention, recognition, and treatment of injuries and illnesses. Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) recertification is provided upon completion. Saturday and Sunday, January 21st and 22nd, 9 A.M. – 5 P.M. Instructors: Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities staff. Register at least two weeks in advance.

Our annual Winterfest ribbon cutting and bonfire party! We’ll enjoy ice skating and music. Our surprise guest of honor will cut the ribbon of ice to officially open Winterfest at 6:30pm.

Jazzyaoke - Waterbury Winterfest

What do you get when you cross jazz with karaoke? Jazzyaoke: your opportunity to front a LIVE six-piece jazz band and sing the standards! All lyrics are provided. For every song (up to five) that you sing at the mic, you get a dollar back from your admission fee. You've heard of singing for your supper? At the Grange you sing for your cover! Come early to get a seat and submit your song requests, but please leave your own musical instruments at home unless you are singing (it's not open jam). $5 admission. Singers admitted at a reduced rate or FREE (ultimately) Food and beverages available for purchase. Doors open at 7, music starts at 7:30.

The 5th annual Waterbury Winterfest Broomball Tournament! We play fun co-ed family broomball. The game is similar to hockey but without skates and using a ball instead of a puck; played with five people and a goalie on the ice. Sticks provided. Players wear their own boots/shoes. Event Sponsored by Waterbury Boy Scouts #701. Assemble a team of your friends to compete in the Winterfest Adventure Challenge. Your team will complete four different challenges, testing your speed, agility, accuracy and teamwork. Teams must be of 4-6 players with two age divisions of ages 6 -10 or 11-16. Teams may be same or mixed gender. Prizes awarded to the top teams! $5/per team. Advance registration requested, with same day sign-ups also available.

Connector Trail - Waterbury Winterfest

12:00 pm to 4:00 pm Blush Hill Country Club

The third annual descent of the Village to Little River Connector trail will depart from the Blush Hill Country club parking lot. Skiers and Snow shoers are welcome to enjoy this delightful tour which includes several sweet side bar tree shots for back country telemarkers, picturesque giant rocks, and a switchback final descent that drops onto a lovely rolling finish with scenic views of multiple bends of the Little River. Cross the snow-machine bridge and its a short walk to a waiting shuttle bus for a return ride to starting point.
