What to expect?

There will be food and drinks, some for the taking and some more for purchase. When you arrive, we’ll take a few minutes to say hello, go over consent expectations, then we’ll get movin’! Move, groove, do some yoga, just get in your flow zone. The idea here is to feel the music and feel alive. Similar to ecstatic dance, the playlist will start with slower songs and work its way to a faster rhythm then down again to close. Music will go for about one hour.

You! We’re asking everyone who RSVPs to list a couple of songs they want to contribute to a flowy groove; this could be anything from your favorite oldie to an instrumental beat. We just ask it’s appropriate for all ears and has a positive message. Send us what you have, and we’ll do our best to include as many songs as we can.

Like so many of us, McKibben grew up believing—knowing—that the United States was the greatest country on earth. As a teenager, he cheerfully led American Revolution tours in Lexington, Massachusetts. He sang “Kumbaya” at church. And with the remarkable rise of suburbia, he assumed that all Americans would share in the wealth.

But fifty years later, he finds himself in an increasingly doubtful nation strained by bleak racial and economic inequality, on a planet whose future is in peril.


And he is curious: What the hell happened?

In this revelatory cri de coeur, McKibben digs deep into our history (and his own well-meaning but not all-seeing past) and into the latest scholarship on race and inequality in America, on the rise of the religious right, and on our environmental crisis to explain how we got to this point. He finds that he is not without hope. And he wonders if any of that trinity of his youth—the flag, the cross, the station wagon—could, or should, be reclaimed in the fight for a fairer future.

Waterbury's annual Independence Day Celebration takes place on the last Saturday in June and is affectionately known as Not Quite Independence Day, or NQID. The fun kicks off with a Freedom & Unity themed parade on Main Street at 4 pm and the Green Mountain Mile fun run just before. Following the parade, there will be a concert at Rusty Parker Memorial Park from Barbie N Bones, along with food and beverage vendors, and kids activities includi ...

Join author Christopher Shaw, professor of Creative Writing at Middlebury College and associate director of the Middlebury Fellowships in Environmental Journalism to discuss his new novel which follows the tales of an aging woodsman and bootlegger, the discovery of a diary, and travels during Prohibition from the villages northern New York to Montreal and a thrilling escape by canoe across the St. Lawrence River in the dead of winter.
