The Youth Opera Company of OCM (Opera Company of Middlebury) will perform an original opera featuring scenes from five of Mozart's operas. Eight high school singers from five schools, including Harwood UHS, Montpelier HS, and U32 HS, will perform arias and duets to tell a story of typical high school seniors in 1950's America.

Borrowing themes from the 1972 film Grease, the show will begin with a senior class divided between “greasers” and “preppies.” Through the course of the story, friendships, romances, and the common experiences of setting off to begin their lives as adults unite the senior class. Opera buffs will recognize arias and duets from The Marriage of Figaro, Cosi fan tutte, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, and the Clemency of Tito.

YOC Music Director Mary Jane Austin will accompany on piano. OCM's Director of Education Sarah Cullins will direct.

Award-winning multi-instrumentalist and composer, Anabel Gil Díaz was born in 1994 in
Havana, Cuba where she graduated from the Superior Institute of Art. She has developed professionally as a flutist, professor, and producer with the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra under the conduction of Orbert Davis. She performs both classical and jazz. Ms. Gil attended the Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice at Berklee School of Music on a full Presidential Scholarship. She received a Masters in Jazz and Contemporary Music from the Longy School of Music. Ms. Gil can be heard on Terri-Lyne Carrington’s Grammy-Award winning album New Jazz Standards Vol. 1. Gil participates as session flautist for Harvard Composers’ Association (HCA) and for Berklee’s Scoring Session Program (SSP). Her writing has been commissioned by MassArt Art Museum, Boston’s Landmarks Orchestra, and Brandeis University. Ms. Gil has performed at Reno Jazz Festival, Arlington Jazz Festival, Momence Jazz Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival and at prestigious venues throughout the United States and Europe.

Physical access. Accessing the gallery involves climbing up two steps and walking on the paved sidewalk of a paved street. A ramp can be provided on request. The venue is single story. We have a bathroom on site on the first floor, however it is not ADA compliant.
Personal assistants. If you require a personal assistant or caregiver with you, we will be happy to offer them a complimentary ticket. To arrange this, simply add a complimentary caregiver ticket to your basket when booking online.

Assistance dogs. We welcome assistance and guide dogs at The Phoenix and are happy for them to accompany you in any of our spaces at the venue and can join you in the gallery for events. Please notify us if you will be bringing a dog to a performance so we can alert the artists.

Programs. If an artist is supplying a program for their performance, copies printed in a large, easy to read font are available upon request. Please notify us 48hrs in advance if you require an accessible program at [email protected].
